In this series I explore how memoirs create our understanding of the environment around us. I do this by working in an intuitive process that involves using a polaroid camera to gather a large body of photographic references. These include people and places such as my past homes or closest friends. Physically cropping and covering the photos to explore specific views of the images has become a fundamental practice in this body of work. I then allow the emotional connection I have to the subject matter to develop a visual language within the painting. Part of this vocabulary is applying and subtracting thin layers of paint to create a diffused lighting that sculpts the image. Each painting becomes a chance for me to reflect upon the relationships I have with the people and places closest to me.
