reference materialusing AfterEffects' Depth of Field for Lightwave Renders
by Rob Sapko
This is a basic tutorial to show you how to use some of the 3D effects in After Effects using the RPF/RLA format in Lightwave. In this case, we will be using the depth of field effect found in the 3D channels tab in After Effects.

First, we will set up our scene in Lightwave using simple objects made in modeler. Next, we make sure that the plugins we need for this tutorial are loaded into lightwave. We need the videotap.p plug-in which has the Extended RLA Export and Extended RPF Export filters. These are added through the Add Plugin tab in the Layout/Plugins menu (Image01).

After we have our scene set up for rendering, we add the filter we want to use, in this case it's the Extended RPF Exporter in the Effects tab found in the Image processing menu (Image02). We can select the the buffers we want to use depending on what is available to us in our version of After Effects. These tabs are viewable after double clicking on the filter in the Effects menu (Image03).

Once we've selected the buffers we need, (in this case we only care about the Depth buffer because we're going to work with the Depth of Field Effect in After Effects), we decide on where we want our images to save (Image04).

Next step is to render our pics by executing the render all frames --> F10. We see that our process show that it is Filtering our pics in RPF format (Image05). Basically what this is doing is taking the 3D information that your scene has and allowing us to add effects to an image.

Now all we have to do is open up After Effects, import the RPF sequence (Image06), and adjust our effect settings to give us the outcome we need for our movie or image.
