reference material Covert Video Capturing in Public Spaces
by Justin Gault

This tutorial is intended for those artists out there who feel that public space is just that...public space. In today's world, to capture this public space at it's purest moment, you must move in camouflage. To get a non-performance from your actors, they must consider you one of them. You, as the videographer, must perform covertly. What this means, is that, the people interacting in these public spaces, must not take notice to your actions. So, not only must you present yourself in a casual and non-threatening manner, you must, obviously, also conceal your equipment. In this tutorial I will show you an example of how to conceal your video camera in a side-carry bag.

Disclaimer: Laws will vary from city to city, state to state. So, before you attempt to do this in your area be sure to consult your local laws and restrictions. A good source to begin research would be the ACLU.

Here are all the necessary elements for completing this project. Mini-DV Camcorder, preferred, A sturdy bag, big enough for the camera, extra black cloth, and something to brace around the camera.

This is the front brace for the camera. You can see there is a hole cut in the front to allow for the lens to see. It is constructed of styrofoam, which was carved with a simple steak knife, and then covered with a latex paint. Do not use spray paint, it will eat away the styrofoam, and a give you a way-out buzz.

The camera then slides into place, in the bag. Use scraps of cardboard to firm up the sides.

Next cover the camera with piece of cardboard, cut to fit perfectly in the space, to keep the sides out. Cover the cardboard in fabric, to create the sense of a false bottom, if necessary.

Before putting all the accessories into the bag you need to cut a hole for the camera to see through. I suggest cutting a lower horizontal line and two verticals. This way your finger can simply push the tab in and up, quite easily.

You might want to also consider wearing a silly, eye-catching hat when you go out. Anything to take attention away from the bag, without drawing too much attention to your actions.

As far as suggestions of public spaces... Unfortunately they are dwindling. Try going to your local mall, and see how long it takes security to toss you. Or maybe hit WalMart, or one of your many local-neighborhood Starbucks, just for kicks. Thankfully, in most parts of the U.S., Parks, Open-Air Markets, Downtown Streets and Sidewalks, and Public Parks, still make ideal locations for capturing video.

Do be careful when capturing footage near any federal buildings, or any locations of mass transit. I have been questioned by authorities at both, and thrown out of a subway station.
