The Macintosh in the front of the lab is the "digitizing" station. All the steps to digitize will need to be done working at that station.



Step 1
Log-in to the Macintosh

A request for a log-in ID and password will appear on the screen. Type "student" in the ID area and use the password your instructor has given your class.




 

Step 2
Ready the Digitizing Camera

Turn on the power to the surge protector hanging on the wall just behind and to the left of the copystand.

There is a switch in place next to the station that allows you to select the camera you want to digitize with. Switch 1, labeled "CAM1", is the camera on the movable tripod and switch 2, labeled "CAM2" is the stationary camera on the copystand. Illustration B

Take off the lens cap.

Turn on any lights you will be using via the dimmer switches located to the right of the copystand.

Be CAREFUL - these lights are HOT!
Don't burn yourself or melt a camera!

You should see an image in the camera's viewfinder.

Step 3
Open the program to digitize

On the bottom edge of the screen you should see a horizontal menu bar. Select the icon that looks like a video camera. This icon represents the program iStopMotion.

When iStopMotion opens a dialog box will appear asking for the settings you would like to use for your new movie.

NOTE: if you receive an error message regarding a video signal, continue to the "Troubleshooting" section.

Step 4
Capture Images

Using the on-screen live video image, position your "subject" and adjust lighting.

Go to the "Movie" menu located at the top of the screen. Select "Capture Image".

Step 5
Exporting Your Work as Images or Movies

Images
Once you have finished capturing all your images, go to the "Edit" menu and click "Select All" to select all frames for exporting.

Once selected, go the the "Edit" menu and export frames as images.

Movies
You also have the option of exporting your frames as a movie. To do this, go to the "Edit" menu and export frames "As Movie".

A dialog box will appear asking what you want to name the movie and where you'd like to save it.

The movie and images will save the size and frames per second indicated on the preferences when you first started your session.


Step 6
Quit the program


When you are finished capturing images, quit the program by selecting "iStopMotion" Menu and then "Quit iStopMotion".


Step 7
Shut down the camera
and the lights

Turn off the surge protector switch. This cuts off power to the camera and the copystand lights.

Step 8
Move your files from the Mac to your hard drive by transferring them over the network


From the Mac Desktop menu's "Go" menu, select "Connect to Server".

A dialog box will appear.

Select "Browse" and click on the "Copper" network selection; then locate your assigned drive.

A dialog box will appear asking for your Windows log-in information so that you can log onto your assigned hard drive.

Finally, another dialog box will appear asking you to choose your share. Select your node and say OK.

Step 9
Disconnect from your drive node

Before logging out, disconnect from your node by dragging the icon representing your node from the desktop into the trash can.

Log Out

After quitting ALL programs, from the desktop, proceed to the Apple menu and select "Log Out Student".

Troubleshooting
If you see any of the error screens to the right - it means the camera signal is not reaching the CPU.

First, check to make sure the power is turned on at the Surge Suppressor.

Second, do you see an image in the viewfinder of the camera? If not, check to make sure the power setting on the camera is set to "Camera". This setting should always remain on "camera" please leave it in this position when you are finished.

Finally, if you still see the error messages AFTER quitting the program and re-opening it, alert a lab monitor or your instructor.
